CHAPTER 3 : Theories Regarding Motivation

In this chapter describing theories about regarding motivation to ourself. The theory is Herzberg’s Motivational Theory, Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, McCleland’s Need-Based Model, and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. First theory is Herzberg’s Motivational Theory by Frederick Herzberg. His theory is also called the motivation-hygiene theory because he considered the factors that satisfied employees to be motivators and those factors that were dissatisfying to be hygiene factors. Hygiene factors being present does not avoid job dissatisfaction, but if you take them away you will find that they can demotivate an employee. Second theory is Vroom’s Expectancy Theory by  Victor Vroom. It focuses not on the needs of a person, but on their outcomes. He saw effort as being the result of motivation, which led to performance and then the resulting outcomes of that performance. He said that in order for a person to be motivated to put forth the effort, he or she must see a link between the three factors – effort, performance, and outcome.

Third theory is McCleland’s Need-Based Model by David McCleland. Based his theory of motivation on the idea that each of us has three fundamental needs, 1) The need for achievement, 2) The need for affiliation, and 3) The need for power (authority). And the forth theory is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs by  Abraham Maslow. Maslow proposed five levels of human needs. The most basic, and therefore the most motivating, are at the bottom of the model.

  1.  Level One - Physiological Needs
  2.  Level Two – Safety Needs 
  3.  Level Three – Belonging Needs 
  4.  Level Four – Ego-Status
  5.  Level Five – Self-Actualization
CHAPTER 4 :  Methods for Improving Self-Confidence  

In this chapter describing about methods for improve self-confidence including 10 Tips to Improve Self-Confidence Instantly, Building Self-Esteem at Work, and Enhancing Your Self-Efficacy. There are 10 Tips to Improve Self-Confidence Instantly that is 1) Dress Up; When you feel that you look your best, you are more likely to carry yourself with more confidence. 2) Step up the Pace, 3) Watch Your Posture; Practice good posture to feel more alert, more confident, and more powerful. 4) Personal Advertisement, 5) Practice Gratitude, 6) Pay People Compliments, 7) Sit Up Front, 8) Speak Up, 9) Exercise; Exercise not only relieves stress, but achieving your physical fitness goals is an excellent way to feel better about your abilities. And 10) Focus on Contributing.

This book tell about how we build self-esteem at work, because self-esteem is important things at work for build collaboration between teams. There are four strategies to help build your self-esteem at work. 1) Pursue Your Passions, take a few moments out of every day to dedicate to something you are passionate about – both at work and at home. 2)Track Your Efforts, 3) Self-Esteem Bulletin Board, and 4)  Stop the Negative Talk. Last is Enhancing Your Self-Efficacy these four methods come from research done on the treatment of those that are struggling to recover from physical injuries, but they can be applied to your work situation as well. They are, 1) Skills mastery, 2) Modeling, 3) Reinterpretation of signs and symptoms, and 4) Persuasion.
